Overwhelmed, stressed, anxious? Try this unique gratitude exercise
Hi! I'm Stella
As we head into the holiday season, I wanted to offer you a way to turbo charge your gratitude practice. This exercise has broken my heart wide open (in a good way). In these trying times we need extra strength interventions. According to research gratitude can decrease depression, improve relationships, amplify your resilience and better your physical health (yes, please!). See below and please let me know how it went!
Choose an option below and give yourself at least 5-10 minutes.
Option 1: Life-Changing Gratitude Letter
Think of a person who has profoundly influenced your life. Write them a letter or an email (you decide if you want to send it). Writing it alone can still melt your heart. Describe:
- What they did to impact you
- The character strengths they exhibited (like kindness, bravery, patience)
- How their actions made you feel
- The ripple effects of their support or kindness on your life
Option 2: Everyday Appreciation Letter
Consider someone who made a positive difference in your week. Write them a note to acknowledge:
- What they did to impact you or others
- The character strengths they exhibited (like kindness, bravery, patience)
- The ripple effects of their support or kindness on your life
I suggest writing this out with a paper and pen to slow you down. Let the appreciation accumulate. If you're courageous enough to share your note it will compound the effects. Consider doing this as a team or family. It's so easy to focus on what's wrong, give yourself a moment to savor the people who help things feel more right.
